CàP in Hand

The Chasseurs à Pied are ready, and I'm even prepared to admit that I'm quite chuffed with them.

Only two paint conversions were required to turn my Dutch grenadiers into Chasseurs: a change to their cuffs to make them pointy, and an extra little tassel on their bearskins.

They were easier to paint than ordinary line infantry, although I complicated things a bit by giving them their full-dress, summer gaiters. The original plan was to paint these black as I'd noticed that wargamers tend to paint their Chasseurs in a rather grungy, campaign-stained style, no doubt as a way of adding a bit of variety to their otherwise pristine guard divisions. When I saw the effect of the white gaiters on my test figure, however, I was hooked.

I was hoping that finishing this battalion would cure my very long-standing desire for French guardsmen for the time being, but I'm wondering what they'd look like in white and red as Dutch grenadiers now!

  1. Every bit as stunning -- and then some -- as Gilder's early figures 40+ years ago!

    Best Regards,

  2. Lovely Matt. Proper 1/1e chasseurs.
Cambronne looks as fine commanding the attack as he did in the 'square' in your previous post!

  6. I'm a lot happier when you admit to being proud of your handiwork, Matthew. These are fab, though for me their pose does not quite achieve the Gallic swagger of your Guard voltigeurs. Now, I have always wanted to see a decently painted battalion of Dutch grenadiers............

    1. According to the secret Hinton Spieler mobilisation schedule, Dutch Grenadiers will be appearing in about 2019, Archduke... Unless I crack and do them next week, of course. Having forsworn Austrians I've got to get a pristine white battalion from somewhere.

  8. Awesome as always. DKs are a weedy bunch, (rather like Hzh that have been remoulded a couple of times! but you have a skill in bringing them to life .
Looking forward to the Dutch, or maybe a Battalion de Westphalie? They look good in white.

    1. Thanks, Roy.

They are a bit slim and, as the Archduke says, lack the elegance of Marcus's work at its best. However, they're still Chasseur-shaped, which was good enough for me!

These are the last of the Phase-One French infantry, which are all DKs. Phase Two will be much more Hinton Huntish!
